Grade 8 Math
Welcome to Grade 8 Math. This is where you will find assignments, due dates and additional resources. Please check as often as you like to stay involved in yours (students) or your child’s (parents) math learning.
Topics included in the course:
Basic facts using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) are fundamental in all concepts of mathematics learning, therefor we will practicing these regularly in class and students should be practicing them at home to improve mathematical fluency.
Mental math strategies are also important to becoming a confident math user. New strategies will be introduced from time to time but daily mental math activities where all strategies are practiced and assessed will be part of the grade 8 program.
Problem solving strategies will be introduced periodically, with multiple chances to practice each strategy. Students will also complete multiple word problems throughout each unit of study and will be tested on their problem solving on each unit test.
Unit tests will be given at the conclusion of each topic, with practice tests available in the textbook and from the Mathlinks 8 website for studying purposes. Additional resources may also be provided from time to time, in class and on the site. Students will be notified a minimum of one week in advance of tests.
Homework is to be completed prior to the start of class the day following when it was assigned. This will be assessed in a variety of ways including teacher correcting, peer correcting and self-correcting. Should homework not be completed, contact will be made through email or text messages. If you did not provide one of these methods of contact that you check regularly on the sign in sheet with your child’s homeroom teacher, please email how you would like to be reached to the address below.
Email, push or text message reminders about homework will be sent using the Remind app to those who sign up for them. Students and parents can sign up for these notifications as the remind app does not transfer phone numbers or email addresses, but only communicates using the name you sign up with. If you have misplaced your sheet from smooth start or were not able to attend, this information is also available on the resources page of the site.
Please feel free to contact me at the school by email at [email protected] or by telephone at 204 345 2585 should you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Kim Stevenson
